Does anyone know of an affordable insurance company for an individual (major insur. companies preferrably)?
I am an individual contractor and in need of a health and dental insurance. There are so many to choose from and I don't know which ones I should be focusing on. Lower deductibles and higher copay better? What's an ideal payment each month? $200? $150? I need help.

- Call insurance agents, they more than want to give you this information. Age plays a factor and so does if you are a smoker or not. You need to talk to many agents to find out about their plans/limitations/requirements.
- Try progressive. They will give you a bunch of different rates for a bunch of different insurance companies that way you can compare yourself. And they will be able to explain to you what each has as far as deductibles and what is covered. Website is www.progressive.com.
- Go to an independent agent. If you're 30 and healthy, you can get "health insurance" for around $200 a month. It goes up about $100 a month for every 10 years you're older. If you're NOT healthy, it goes up much faster than that. Low deductibles mean higher monthly premiums and copays. High deductible can seriously reduce your cost. If you're healthy and young, it could cut the premium in half - but that's more a "major medical" policy than health insurance. Dental insurance is probably not going to work for you - if you "run the numbers" and compare what you pay in, vs. covered benefits, you're usually better off paying out of pocket. As a contractor, if you don't have workers comp, a lot of health insurance companies are going to balk at covering you; they will assume (rightly) that work injuries will be picked up by THEM, rather than by workers comp. So that's definately going to be a problem for you. You really WILL need a local agent to shop around to find someone to cover you. Go local - you can easily get scammed by buying "coverage" online, and your "local provider" might end up being 300 miles away.
- contact an independent insurance agent they can check many different companies at once. it save you the time and hassle of calling each company yourself and they can break it down for you from there. www.petersenassoc.com my agent Joe Tilley Jr. tell him geoff gifford referred you. he is great. he can help you, he sure helped me out a lot.

- I would recommend finding an Online service such as http://InsuranceGuideplus.com , that can match you with the most affordable insurance plans. They scout for independent agents from every major company , as well as smaller independent insurance companies. This way you can pick and choose what you want without the need for an insurance agent. Hope that was helpful.
- There’s a new company offering low cost individual health plans in Texas for young, reasonably healthy people, and is a great health insurance solution for the self-employed. You buy into a plan at a super low cost with fixed benefits that will cover the typical activities and preventative care of a healthy person. Then, if something catastrophic happens, you have the option to get additional levels of coverage, even AFTER the event. A healthy male 25-years-old (and under) would pay under $100 a month for basic coverage. Check them out at http://www.precedent.com - Even if you’re not in Texas, my understanding is that they’ll be offering plans in additional states soon. Plus, they’re backed by a traditional insurance company that’s been around for over 70 years, so even though they’re new on the scene, they have a solid reputation behind them. I hope you find what you need!
- Everything depends on what you need.
