Scan Medical Insurance

I want to get lap band done in texas. Will my insurance cover it? I will have Blue cross blue shield?

When I start my job I will have the insurance through University of Texas medical branch. I think I have the option to select HMO or PPO. What doctor in the Houston area does the surgery that accepts the insurance. And how much does insurance usually cover on these procedures? thanks

  1. Before you select your new insurance read up on the benefits & then call the company,BCBS, to double check coverage. Most procedures are covered if deemed medically necessary. The amount of coverage would depend on the policy. Also remember with an HMO you must get referalls from your PCP, primary care physician to any specialty Dr. PPO's you can use any Dr but generally they must be within the facility of choice for complete coverage according to policy benefits. If you go out of network for your care, your out of pocket expenses will be higher.Your benefits administrator at your new job should have a list of the physicians & facilities in the area.
  2. Usually they will only cover it after having exhausted all other possibilities for weight loss. Since the insurance is new there is prolly a 6 month or a 1 yr pre existing condition that they will not cover at all. I have BCBS and they cover 80%
