Blue Cross Blue Shield of New England out of network?

My company provides Blue Cross Blue Shield of New England health insurance because my company's corporate office is in MA. But I am placed on client site in NY. Can I take advantage of my company's medical insurance or do I have to pay always out-of-network?

  1. You need to read your policy. With most PPO policies, if you live in an area where there is no network participating providers, they will pay as ' in-network'. If you can't locate the info in your handbook, call the membership phone number on your card, or handbook, and ask them.
  2. First, I didn't think the name was BCBS of New England, I thought it was BCBS of Mass. Call your corporate office and ask for a Benefits Highlights or SPD (Summary Plan Description). The report will tell you if they cover doctors in New York. Most larger companies with multiple sites offer some sort of coverage that will cover people not working in the corporate office. BCBS has a larger nationwide network (one of the prime selling features of BCBS) so reciprocal agreements can be worked out, but there are additional fees. If you are the only person who lives out of the local network, it may be hard. We have made arrangements for people living remotely to have their claims covered "in network" when they live far from network doctors. However, we have 6,000+ Employees and are self insured. If you work for a smaller company and are on a fully insured product your company may not have that leeway.
